Sonmarg Winding River

4 days, 3 nights

Sonmarg and the Road to Zojila

Four days up the Sindh valley to the edge of Ladakh

The trip

What this is

A short trip that follows the Sindh river east from Srinagar, with a night in Sonmarg and a drive toward the Zojila pass. Good for people who want a taste of the high country without committing to a full Ladakh trip.

Best for. A first look at the higher, barer landscape beyond the green valleys, on a short schedule.

Highlights

  • A night in Sonmarg after the day visitors have gone
  • The walk toward the Thajiwas glacier
  • The drive toward Zojila, as far as conditions allow
  • The Sindh valley in full summer green
  • A first and last night on Dal Lake

  • Accommodation as listed, on a twin-sharing basis
  • Daily breakfast, and dinner where you are staying outside Srinagar
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off
  • All road tolls, parking and driver costs
  • A day-by-day plan and a single point of contact while you travel

Worth knowing before you book

  • The Zojila road carries heavy freight and convoy traffic. We time the drive to avoid the worst of it and turn back where it makes sense.
  • Sonmarg itself needs only one night unless you are trekking.
  • The whole route depends on the pass being open, usually May to September.

Questions

Do we actually cross Zojila?

Not on this trip. We drive up toward it for the landscape and turn around before the pass. Crossing into Ladakh is a longer trip with acclimatisation built in, which we can plan separately.

Is one night in Sonmarg really better than a day trip?

For most people, yes. The day crowd leaves by late afternoon and the valley changes completely. If your schedule is tight, the day trip from Srinagar still works.
