Gulmarg Snow Lodge

5 days, 4 nights

Snow Season in Gulmarg

Five days built around the snow, with Srinagar on either side

The trip

What this is

A winter trip for people who want real snow rather than a quick look at it. Three nights in Gulmarg gives you time for the gondola, for lessons or guided runs if you ski, and for the days when the weather closes in and you wait it out by a fire.

Best for. Skiers and snowboarders, and anyone who wants to spend a few days properly in the snow rather than passing through it.

Highlights

  • Three nights in Gulmarg, so a bad weather day does not cost you the trip
  • Both stages of the gondola when Apharwat is open
  • Ski or board hire, lessons and guides arranged through people we work with
  • A night in Srinagar at each end, with the winter lake to yourself
  • Time to do nothing when the snow is coming down hard

Worth knowing before you book

  • The Gulmarg road and the gondola both close for weather. Three nights is the minimum that makes the trip reliable.
  • January and February have the most snow and the fewest rooms. Book two to three months ahead.
  • Bring proper cold-weather clothing. Gear can be hired locally but good outerwear is worth bringing.

Questions

I have never skied. Is Gulmarg a good place to learn?

The lower slopes around Kongdoori are fine for lessons and there are instructors we can put you with. The terrain above the second gondola stage is serious and not for beginners.

What if the gondola is closed the whole time?

It happens. That is why the trip has three nights in Gulmarg rather than one. There is lower-slope skiing, snowshoeing, and the option to sit tight. We do not control the weather and we are honest about that when you book.

Is the drive to Gulmarg safe in winter?

The road is cleared regularly and our drivers do it through the season, but it can be slow or briefly shut after heavy snow. We plan the days so a delayed arrival does not break anything.
