Gurez, Over the Razdan Pass

Six days to one of the quietest valleys in Kashmir

The trip

What this is

Gurez takes a long day to reach and is worth it. You cross the Razdan pass, drop to the Kishanganga, and spend three nights among log houses at Dawar and Tulail, with Habba Khatoon peak over the valley. Simple stays, few other travellers, and a landscape that feels a long way from Srinagar.

Best for. Travellers who have seen the main valleys already, or who would simply rather go somewhere quiet and are fine with basic rooms.

Highlights

  • Three nights in the valley, split between Dawar and Tulail
  • The Kishanganga close enough to hear at night
  • Villages of log houses that are still lived in, not preserved
  • A short walk to the base of Habba Khatoon peak
  • A night in Bandipora to break the drive both ways

The long climb to the pass and the drop into the Kishanganga valley. Afternoon to walk around Dawar and get used to the quiet.

Worth knowing before you book

  • Foreign nationals currently cannot travel to Gurez. Indian nationals do not need a permit. Check with us before booking.
  • Carry enough cash for the whole trip. Cards and mobile payments do not work reliably past Bandipora.
  • Rooms are simple: clean beds, shared or basic bathrooms, home-cooked food. That is the trip.
  • The pass can close after summer storms, which can add a day. Keep the schedule loose at the end.

Questions

How bad is the drive?

It is long and the pass road is rough in places, but it is done routinely through the summer. We break it with a night in Bandipora on the way in. The day back is the hardest part of the trip.

Is it safe? It is near the Line of Control.

Gurez is open to Indian tourists and has been for years. There are army checkposts and you carry ID. Our drivers know the route and the checkpost routine. If the situation changes we will tell you before you travel.

What is there actually to do?

Not much, by design. You walk, you sit by the river, you spend time in the villages, you read. If you need a full programme every day, this is not the trip for you.
