About Sonmarg
Sonmarg is a summer valley on the road east from Srinagar toward the Zojila pass and Ladakh. The drive in follows the Sindh river past Kangan and Gagangir, and the meadow opens out below the Thajiwas glacier with peaks on three sides.
Most people visit as a day trip from Srinagar. An overnight is worth it if you want the valley after the day visitors leave, or if you are trekking, since several routes into the high country start here.
What to do in Sonmarg
Walk toward Thajiwas
A short walk of about an hour from the meadow brings you close to the snout of the Thajiwas glacier. Ponies are available at union rates if you would rather ride, but the walk is easy.
The drive toward Zojila
You can drive up toward the pass as far as Baltal, through bare, dramatic country very different from the green lower valley. The road carries heavy freight and convoy traffic, so timing matters.
The Sindh river
The stretch of river around Gagangir and Sonmarg is clear and fast, good for an hour by the water on the way in or out.
Trek starts
Routes to Vishansar and Krishansar lakes and the wider Kashmir Great Lakes circuit begin near here. These are multi-day treks that need planning and support.
Getting there
By road from Srinagar, about 80 km and two and a half hours up the Sindh valley on the Srinagar to Leh highway. The road usually opens by late April and can close briefly in heavy summer weather. Beyond Sonmarg the Zojila pass is the gateway to Ladakh and is a different undertaking.
Where to stay
Sonmarg has a small number of hotels and some seasonal tented camps near the meadow. Standards are basic to mid-range. One night is usually enough unless you are trekking. Many people stay in Srinagar and visit for the day instead.
Worth knowing before you go
- The road to Sonmarg can close at short notice for weather, even in summer. Keep the day flexible.
- Ponies to Thajiwas are run by a local union at set rates. The walk is short and does not need one.
- There is little reason to stay more than one night here unless a trek starts the next morning.

Is Sonmarg better as a day trip or an overnight?
For most people a day trip from Srinagar is enough. Stay a night only if you want the valley to yourself in the evening, or if you are starting a trek.
Can we drive to Ladakh from Sonmarg?
Yes, over the Zojila pass, but that is a full trip in its own right with acclimatisation to plan for. On a Sonmarg day we drive up toward the pass for the landscape and turn back.
