The place
About Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley
Pahalgam sits where the Lidder river comes down cold and fast from the Kolahoi glacier. It is a good base for people who want to be near mountains without a long drive every day. The side valleys are close: Aru and Betaab are short trips, Chandanwari is a morning, and there are quiet trails on the far bank of the river that most visitors never reach.
Three nights here is enough to walk a little, sit by the water a lot, and go only as far as you feel like on any given day.
What to do in Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley
Aru and the walk toward Lidderwat
Aru is a small village about 12 km up the valley from Pahalgam, and the trail from it toward the Lidderwat meadow is the best easy walk in the area. Go as far as you want and turn back when it suits you.
Betaab valley
A wide green floor with the Lidder braided across it and steep walls on both sides, about 15 km from Pahalgam. An hour or two is plenty. Go early, before the buses.
Chandanwari
The start of one route of the Amarnath yatra, at the end of a rough road. Pleasant enough outside the pilgrimage season, busy and slow during it.
The far bank of the Lidder
Cross the river above Pahalgam town and walk upstream, away from the pony stands. This is the quiet side, and it is where people end up spending their afternoons.
Baisaran
A meadow above the town, sometimes open to visitors and sometimes not. Check current access before you count on it.
Getting there
By road from Srinagar, about 90 km and two and a half hours through Anantnag and Bijbehara. From the airport it is roughly the same. The trips to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari are handled by the local taxi union at fixed rates, and your own vehicle usually cannot take you on those specific legs, which catches people out at the stand.
Where to stay
Pahalgam town has the most rooms and the easiest access to the side valleys and to places to eat. Aru is smaller, quieter and better if you want to walk from the door, but it has only a handful of guesthouses and they fill up. Along the river between the two there are a few hotels with good positions above the water.
Worth knowing before you go
- Local taxi unions run the trips to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari on a fixed-rate system. We build this into the plan so there is no argument at the stand.
- Aru has limited beds. If you want to stay there, book early.
- Nights are cold from mid-October. By late October the first snow can reach the valley.

Pahalgam town or Aru?
Aru is quieter and better for walking straight from your room, but small. Pahalgam town has more rooms, more food, and easier access to Betaab and Chandanwari. If your trip is about slow days and short walks, Aru. If you want a bit more going on, the town.
Is Pahalgam good for people who do not walk much?
Yes. The valley rewards sitting still by the river as much as walking. Betaab and the riverbanks need almost no effort, and the drives are short.
How many nights?
Two nights is the minimum to make the drive worth it. Three lets you have a proper walking day, a slow day, and a side-valley day without rushing any of them.
