When to visit Kashmir, month by month

What the valley is actually like through the year, so you can pick dates that match the trip you want rather than the one the brochure sells.

Autumn Path

People ask us for the best time to visit Kashmir and the honest answer is that it depends on what you are coming for. The valley is not one place across the year. A week in April and a week in January are different trips with different clothes, different roads, and different photographs. Here is how the year runs.

March and April: bare trees, then blossom

Early spring is quiet and cheap. The gardens are still brown, the higher meadows are shut, and the light can be flat for days. Then, usually from the first week of April, the almond blossom opens on the slopes below Hari Parbat and the whole mood changes within about ten days. The tulip garden on the edge of Srinagar opens for roughly two to three weeks, often early to mid April, though the exact dates move with the weather and are only announced a few days ahead.

Come now if you want the valley without crowds and do not mind that Gulmarg and Sonmarg are not fully open. Bring layers. Nights are cold.

May and June: the meadows open

This is the classic window. Gulmarg is green, Pahalgam is running with snowmelt, and the Sonmarg road usually clears by late April or early May. Everything is open and everything is busy, especially around school holidays in June. Book rooms in Gulmarg and Aru well ahead.

If you want the standard first trip, the four well-known valleys with time to walk in each, this is when to do it.

July and August: warm, green, and sometimes wet

High summer is the warmest stretch, comfortable in the day and cool at night. The trade-off is rain. Spells of heavy weather can sit over the valley for a few days and close the higher passes. This is also the only window for Gurez, once the Razdan pass is reliably clear.

Come now if your dates are fixed by work or school and you are willing to keep the itinerary loose at the mountain end.

September and October: the best light of the year

Late September into October is our favourite time to be here. The air is clear, the crowds thin out after the summer rush, and from the second week of October the chinar leaves turn through yellow and deep red. The Lidder valley and the old Srinagar gardens are worth the trip on their own at this point.

The catch is that it cools quickly. By late October, mornings in Pahalgam are near freezing and the first snow can dust Gulmarg. Pack properly.

November: the shoulder

The colour drops, the light goes soft and grey, and the valley settles before winter. Some mountain hotels close. It is a strange, calm time that suits people who want Srinagar and the lake with almost nobody around, and who are not fussed about the hill stations.

December to February: snow

Winter is its own trip. Gulmarg becomes a working snow town, with lift-served skiing that draws people from a long way off. Srinagar gets cold and still. Dal Lake sometimes freezes at the edges, and the old city under snow is quiet in a way it never is in summer.

January and February have the most snow and the fewest rooms in Gulmarg. If a winter trip is the plan, book two to three months out and expect the road up to Gulmarg to be slow after a heavy fall.

So, when should you come?

  • For an easy first trip with everything open: mid May to late June.
  • For clear air, colour and fewer people: late September to mid October.
  • For snow: mid January to late February.
  • For the tulips and the quiet: early to mid April, accepting that the high valleys are not fully open.

Tell us the window you are working with and what matters most on the trip, and we will tell you honestly whether your dates fit it or whether shifting by a week would help.
